A Registered Psychotherapist (RP) is an individual who is registered with the College of Registered Psychotherapists of Ontario.
Psychotherapy is a controlled health profession act in Ontario. The definition of the controlled act of psychotherapy in Ontario is “treating by means of psychotherapy technique, delivered through a therapeutic relationship, an individual’s serious disorder of thought, cognition, mood, emotional regulation, perception or memory that may seriously impair the individual’s judgment, insight, behavior, communication or social functioning.” In Ontario, Registered Psychotherapists are authorized to perform the controlled act of psychotherapy.

Most insurance plans now cover Registered Psychotherapy and Registered Social Work (RSW) and it is the responsibility of the client to check with their insurance company before attaining services. After each session, the therapist will provide the client with a receipt of payment, and this can be used to submit an insurance claim and reimbursement.

When beginning your psychotherapy journey, please note that there are no set number of sessions that are recommended however, research shows that with consistent weekly or bi-weekly sessions, clients begin to notice changes between 7-10 sessions. The therapist may sometimes recommend homework in the form of journaling, breath work, thought logs and other practices. Individuals who devout time to these practices and homework may notice the benefits earlier.
